When we are in school it is fair to say we think we know everything about most things. Majority of people will go through a "phase" of thinking they know how to do absolutely everything without help. Unfortunately schools do not prepare kids for the adult world as much as they think they do. When I got to college I had friends who would help me with my algebra homework with no issues, but in return I needed to teach them how to do their own laundry. As a young adult who has been out of school for over a year now I can positively say I very rarely have to use algebra but I have to do my laundry at least once a week. So here is a list of things we should be teaching our children.
1) How to do their laundry
2) How to balance their checkbook
3) How to budget their money
4) How to change a car tire
5) What to do after a car accident
6) How to write a resume and cover letter (properly)
7) How to go into a job interview, and what to say
8) How to use the oven/stove
9) Basic cooking and cleaning skills
10) How to unplug a sink or toilet
11) How to properly use everything in a basic tool kit
12) How to take public transportation
13) How to work a grill
14) How to make a fire
15) How to build a respectable wardrobe
16) How to get around without a GPS
17) How to parallel park
18) How to jump-start a car
19) How to iron clothes and what clothes to iron
20) Basic survival skills
21) How to sew
22) How to ask questions
23) How to listen
24) How to apologize and own up to mistakes
25) How to check a cars oil
26) How to preform basic first aid
27) How to talk to strangers
